Early Literacy Volunteers
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Smart Start Partnership for Children! Smart Start welcomes volunteers to do everything from helping register children for programs to data-entry, to helping with clerical tasks to traveling around the community to pick up books and distribute registration forms!
Volunteers contribute thousands of hours annually on their own schedules and make it possible for Smart Start to expand our impact and reach more children by freeing up limited funds to invest in young children and families!
Board and Committee Service
Smart Start Partnership for Children is governed by an active Board of Directors representing parents, health care, public agencies, private businesses, communities of faith, child care centers, educational institutions, civic organizations and concerned citizens. Board Members are volunteers who contribute their expertise, professional resources and time to building a stronger future for Henderson County.
Citizens-at-large, as well as current and former board members, are welcome to serve on Smart Start Partnership for Children's board of directors or committees and task forces. Participation on a committee is a great way help shape the decisions and plans developed to meet the specific needs of our county’s youngest residents. If you are interested in serving on a committee, please contact Smart Start at 828-693-1580 or complete and submit a board application and indicate that you are interested in serving on a committee(link to board application).
Community Outreach and Education Committee
The Community Outreach and Education Committee leads the Board’s participation in public education, advocacy, and fund development efforts. The Committee works with staff to educate board and community members on early care and education policy at the local, state, and federal level. This Committee will use the First 2,000 Days campaign and other messages to advocate for quality early care and education to increase positive outcomes for all young children in our community. This Committee will also work alongside staff to establish a fundraising plan that maximizes the organization’s ability to raise money and help familiarize the Board with fundraising skills and techniques. Program Planning Committee
Smart Start Partnership for Children funds and supports activities in three program areas: early care and education, health and safety, and family support. The Program Planning Committee works to develop and plan programs in these areas. This committee meets periodically to review program evaluation reports, recommend changes to activities for the next contract year, and prioritize recommendations should additional funds become available or budget reductions occur.
